Iron Status is a comprehensive blood test that evaluates your body's iron metabolism and storage capacity. Iron plays a vital role in oxygen transport, energy production, DNA synthesis, and muscle function—making it essential for overall health and vitality. This test measures multiple iron-related markers to provide a complete picture of your iron status. It includes serum iron levels, ferritin (which reflects iron stores), total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin (the primary iron-transport protein), and transferrin saturation (the percentage of transferrin carrying iron). Together, these markers help identify iron deficiency, iron overload, or other metabolic imbalances that may affect your wellbeing. Whether you're experiencing fatigue, investigating anaemia, or monitoring iron levels due to a chronic condition, this test delivers the detailed insights needed for informed health decisions.

FAQs

Common questions.

How long do Iron Status results take?

Iron Status results are typically delivered within 2 working days of the laboratory receiving your sample. You receive a plain English PDF report.

How is the sample collected for Iron Status?

The Iron Status panel requires a venous blood draw at a Chxhealth or partner clinic. The phlebotomy fee is included in the price. Choose our Lanchester clinic or one of our 50+ UK partner and pop-up clinics when you book.

What does the Iron Status panel measure?

The panel covers ferritin (the best single marker of iron stores), serum iron, transferrin, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and transferrin saturation. Together they give a fuller picture than ferritin alone.

When should I avoid iron supplements before testing?

Avoid iron supplements for at least 24 hours before the test for the most accurate baseline. If you have taken iron recently your serum iron can be transiently raised, which can mask underlying deficiency.

Should I also test CRP?

Ferritin rises during infection and inflammation, which can mask iron deficiency. If you have been recently unwell, wait 2 to 4 weeks before testing, or add a CRP test to interpret ferritin in context. Read more in our ferritin glossary entry.
